E-cigarettes are battery operated devices that heat a liquid to produce an aerosol that users inhale, more generally known as vaping.

E-cigarettes and e-liquids containing nicotine are a prescription only medicine. This means community pharmacies can supply e-liquids and e-cigarettes (containing nicotine) to their customers (18 years and over) if they have a valid prescription from a GP.

The Australian government implemented a ban on the import of all disposable vapes on 1 January 2024. The new restrictions are aimed at reducing underage vaping and regulating the supply of nictone-filled vapes.

Health Minister Mark Butler said while these laws were targeted at “choking out supply”, the next stage to be rolled out on 1 March 2024 would instate further measures that restrict the trade of vaping products strictly to pharmaceutical usage.

In addition, the Health Minister said he would introduce new laws in the first session of parliament next week aimed at outlawing all sale and supply of vapes other than through a pharmacist, with a prescription from a GP, to ensure they are designated as a “proper therapeutic product”.

Smoking and Vaping harms nearly every organ of the body with every consumption doing the body harm. However, the body begins to repair itself as soon as smoking has ceased, reducing the risk of developing many diseases. Some people will start to notice the benefits quite quickly.

Speaking to a GP is an excellent starting point if you are thinking about stopping smoking or vaping. They will be able to discuss the appropriate options available and where appropriate put you on a smoking cessation plan.
