Should I get a custom sports mouthguard?

Should I get a custom sports mouthguard?
Dental injuries are predominantly associated with outdoor recreational activities, as well as organised sports, and can have devastating long-term impacts for individuals on an emotional, physical and financial level. Participants of all ages involved in sports and recreational activities at risk of an injury to the face, from physical contact and/or equipment use, should protect their teeth with a properly fitted mouthguard.
Custom-made vs. Off-the-shelf mouthguards
Wearing a mouthguard is the best method of protection for the mouth against dental injuries of the teeth, arches, lips and gums. How do you choose between custom-made or off-the-shelf mouthguards?
Custom-fitted mouthguards: best full mouth protection due to close fit, comfort and shock absorption. As a high quality product, custom-fitted mouthguards are more expensive and can range in cost from just below $100 to over $350.
Off-the-shelf mouthguards: pre-formed with the least amount of protection, fit and comfort. As the cheapest option for mouthguards, it can be very costly in the long-term when further dental injuries are sustained from insufficient mouth protection.
Caring for your mouthguard
To ensure adequate protection, mouthguards need to be cared for and treated properly. To do this, clean regularly after each use with soap and warm water or mouthwash and air-dry. Store your mouthguard in a well ventilated plastic container, keep your mouthguard away from direct sunlight and enclosed spaces, check the condition of the mouthguard before use and bring it to your dental appointment for the dentist to asses and replace if required.
